What Is Dual Auscultation? 

Dual auscultation involves two trained observers simultaneously listening to Korotkoff sounds through a shared stethoscope, independently determining the systolic and diastolic blood pressure values. The approach is designed to: 

  • Reduce observer bias

Systolic blood pressure (SBP) is identified at the first clear Korotkoff sound (Phase I), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) is identified when the sounds disappear (Phase V).
